Every engine of the car produces a variety of noises during operation. The diesel engine is different, otherwise the petrol engine. Loudest is the worn-out engine, specifically the modern downsizing units. Sometimes, however, metallic sounds from the engine compartment start to emit no motor. What do they mean? Is there anything to fear?
There are many types of metallic noise that can come from the engine compartment during its operation. It is quite difficult to determine their exact tone in writing, but we will try to do so.
Metallic squeaks or creaks
Metallic creaks or metallic squeaks that appear when the engine is running, especially when the idle engine is idling, or rising before the engine is switched off, are most often a sign of damage to the coolant pump. The croaking may not be very intense, but it can also be so strong that it will be heard from a distance of several meters. Often, the sound changes its characteristics – when the engine is running and idle, the metallic creak is heard, and when the car goes – it goes into a loud noise.
This is a very dangerous failure. Coolant pump is one of the most important components of the cooling system, which prevents overheating of the drive unit. What to do if the pump is damaged? You need to purchase a new coolant pump, a new timing belt drive – either a set of timing belts with attachments or a set of timing chains with attachments (you will also need to replace crankshaft and crankshaft gear if your metal teeth are worn out).

Metallic, deaf ears
Deaf, metallic beats, increasing the engine speed (during the addition of gas), sometimes rattling, is a very serious problem. It is most often caused by worn panes. The bushes are not expensive, but they are unfortunately replaced by that. All because you have to undress half a motor to get to them. Hence the high price for the service.
Rush and rattle
Metallic rattles and rattles can be a sign of damage to the alternator or to the cooling liquid pump. In this case, the cause is damaged bearings – pumps or alternator. The pump is replaced by a new one, but the alternator can be regenerated. It is not always possible and not always cost-effective, so it may be necessary to purchase a new alternator. Short-term sounds, like forging
If the short-lived metallic sounds, resembling forging, disappearing after the engine is warmed up, it is likely that there is increased valve clearance. Some cars require manual adjustment every now and then.
Impact on the cover
If the engine speed changes rapidly (sudden acceleration or sudden release), the metallic impact on the cover can be heard from the bonnet, with an excessively stretched timing belt or timing chain. In the latter case, a sound is often heard, referred to as metallic rattling. In both cases, you must react as soon as possible so as not to compounds to break the timing belt or jump over the timing chain. Such damage to the timing drive will result in loss of engine synchronization. As a consequence, this may cause serious damage or complete damage to the drive unit.
What do you need to do to remove the malfunction? The solution is to replace the timing drive (belt or chain, depending on engine design, with accompanying elements) and water pump.
Metallic noise, especially when driving, at high engine speeds, often associated with vibration, is a sign of worn and damaged valve guides. The solution is to replace them with new ones. It is also necessary to replace the engine oil and the oil filter.
Every metallic sound, every squeak, rattling or loud rumbling is a symptom of a crash. Do not underestimate such signs, as, as is often the case, failure of one component will quickly cause another failure, and this will increase the cost of repair.
